5 Best Mushroom Coffees — Ranked From Best to Worst

In this blog I tried the 5 most popular mushroom coffees and ranked them from best to worst. I compared taste, energy, ingredients, price and the overall experience — from Coffee 2.0 to Four Sigmatic, Ryze, Everyday Dose and Mud/Wtr. If you’re thinking about switching to mushroom coffee, this overview will save you a lot of time (and money).

My mornings during testing — creamy mushroom coffee and the winning blend.
My mornings during testing — creamy mushroom coffee and the winning blend.

As a lifelong coffee lover, I’ve always had a “love/hate” relationship with caffeine. I adored the ritual, but the anxiety, the afternoon energy crash, the brain fog and the digestive issues kept getting worse.

That’s when I first heard about mushroom coffee. The trend is growing day by day, and it seems more and more people are swapping their morning coffee for these blends. Mushroom coffee combines classic coffee or cacao with medicinal mushrooms and adaptogens — promising calm, stable energy, better focus and even long-term benefits.

But here’s the thing: not all mushroom coffees are equal. Some are tasty and effective, others leave you pretty underwhelmed.

So I tried all the most popular brands — each one for 12 days straight, with weekends to reset. Some pleasantly surprised me, others disappointed, and one completely changed my mornings.

Here’s the final ranking — from best to worst:

Coffee 2.0
1

Coffee 2.0

Best overall

The winner — best taste, the most complete formula and the best value of the bunch.

Pros
  • The taste was a 10/10 for me! The cacao-vanilla flavour was the best of all — creamy, delicious, warming, almost like hot cocoa. If it didn’t have caffeine, I’d drink it all day.
  • I also tried the coffee flavour — 9/10. It satisfies the coffee craving and really tastes like coffee, just slightly instant, so of course it doesn’t compete with premium espresso. But it’s still far better than the other mushroom coffees.
  • No jitters, no crash, no afternoon burnout. My focus lasted up to 7 hours without needing a second cup.
  • I felt calmer, less anxious, yet very productive — and I even slept better than after regular coffee.
  • The most complete formula I found: 5 functional mushrooms (lion’s mane, cordyceps, reishi, chaga, shiitake) + 7 adaptogens + collagen for healthy skin and digestion.
  • A big 240 g bag — it feels like it lasts forever. I’m on day 21 and still have more than half left.
  • It comes with free gifts (frother, metal mug, spoon) that are actually premium, not cheap add-ons.
  • Made in Europe from quality, natural ingredients.
Cons
  • Only one main flavour (cacao/vanilla) and one coffee version. I hope they add matcha or chai soon.
  • The price is higher — around €39.90 for 30 servings. With a subscription it’s around €29 + gifts.
  • It contains collagen, so it’s not suitable for vegans. My friend wouldn’t try it for that reason, and I wish they had a vegan option too.

Four Sigmatic

Four Sigmatic

Good coffee notes and a huge product range — but it made me jittery and it’s pricey.

Pros
  • I liked the taste, but it wasn’t as good as #1. Nice coffee notes, but it’s a very strong, dark coffee and you can still taste the mushrooms.
  • Available in ground, instant and whole-bean versions.
  • A huge range of products: supplements, drinks, protein, creamers…
  • Tested for mycotoxins and mold, with quality organic ingredients.
  • They have a money-back guarantee.
Cons
  • It made me jittery.
  • It has 65 mg of caffeine, which is supposed to be “half the caffeine”, but realistically the difference isn’t that big. An average coffee has around 100 mg.
  • Expensive (€1.45 per serving, or €1.20 with a subscription) + shipping.
  • Despite the “no mushroom taste” claims, I could still taste the mushrooms.
  • It’s hard to understand the difference between products like “Think” and “Focus”. Lots of overlap and confusion.

Everyday Dose
3

Everyday Dose

Smooth and tasty, but the energy is mild, it’s expensive and it tastes more like cocoa.

Pros
  • Tasty, smooth, not too “mushroomy”, but also not as rich as Coffee 2.0. More cocoa than coffee.
  • Instant powder that dissolves easily in a hot or cold drink.
  • The brand markets itself as a “microdose drink” — coffee, collagen, mushrooms and nootropics in one scoop.
  • Quality ingredients, third-party tested.
  • Money-back guarantee.
Cons
  • The energy is very mild. After 2–3 hours I needed another cup.
  • Around €45 for 30 servings, which is about €1.50 per serving — expensive.
  • Only one flavour, and it doesn’t taste like coffee — more of a cocoa blend.
  • It contains collagen, so it’s not for vegans.
  • The branding is pretty “biohacker”, which won’t suit everyone.

Ryze
4

Ryze

Affordable and easy to make, but very earthy, subscription-based and a bit weak.

Pros
  • Contains 6 functional mushrooms — more than many other brands.
  • Lower price (around €0.90 per serving), among the most affordable.
  • Very easy to mix in hot water — no frother needed.
  • Already contains plant-based creamer, so the drink is creamy on its own and practical for travel.
Cons
  • Very earthy, strongly mushroomy taste. This is for hardcore mushroom lovers. It didn’t satisfy my coffee craving.
  • Available only on a subscription model. You can buy once and cancel, but it’s needless hassle.
  • The formula is too spread out — a little of each mushroom = low potency.
  • Complicated return policy, with no real guarantee.

Mud/Wtr
5

Mud/Wtr

Barely any caffeine, gritty texture and overpriced — not for coffee lovers.

Pros
  • 4 functional mushrooms + spices like cinnamon and turmeric.
  • Tested for mycotoxins and mold, with all-organic ingredients.
  • Option to buy once, with no subscription.
  • They donate part of their proceeds to mental-health programs.
Cons
  • The taste was both empty and bitter at once. The turmeric was too dominant.
  • Very little caffeine (1/7 of a cup of coffee). Great for those cutting out caffeine, but not for coffee lovers.
  • Watery, unless you add a lot of creamer — which kind of ruins the “healthy coffee”.
  • Gritty in the mouth — even with a frother it doesn’t mix well.
  • Very expensive: $1.67 per serving ($1.33 with a subscription) + $5 shipping.

Final verdict

My favourite mushroom coffee is Coffee 2.0.

I even ran a blind test among my top 3 — with my sister (a former barista) and my husband (a self-proclaimed coffee lover). Coffee 2.0 came first for both of them. The taste, the complete formula, the long-lasting energy and the best price-to-quality ratio — far ahead of the competition.
